How terms are used in this platform
The Gulmaroks platform uses a specific vocabulary to describe how information is arranged and how users interact with it. Some of these terms have particular meanings within the platform context that differ from their everyday use. This page explains the key terms to help users understand the service descriptions on this site before they submit an access enquiry.
Where a term appears in italics on this page, it has a specific meaning within the platform. These definitions are intended as a practical reference, not a formal glossary.
Classification and categorisation
Category
A category is a predefined grouping within the platform that contains records sharing a defined characteristic or topic. Categories are established by the platform and remain stable. A user navigating the platform will encounter the same categories in the same locations each time they begin a session.
Classification
Classification refers to the process by which records are assigned to categories. This process takes place before a user session begins and is not performed by the user during a session. The result of classification is that each record has a defined location within the category structure before it is accessed.
Record
A record is a discrete item of information within the platform that has been assigned to one or more categories. A record may include references to other records in the same or different categories. The content of a record is fixed within a session; the platform does not alter records based on user input.
Cross-reference
A cross-reference is a relationship between two records in different categories, indicated within the platform interface. Following a cross-reference takes a user from the current record to a related record in another category without losing their position in the original review sequence.
Review and navigation
Review session
A review session is a period of engagement with the platform during which a user navigates through one or more categories and examines the records within them. A session begins when the user accesses the platform and ends when they exit. The arrangement of records is the same at the start of every session.
Review sequence
The review sequence is the order in which categories are presented during a session. The sequence is designed to reflect the logical relationships between categories. Users may follow the sequence in order or navigate directly to a category, depending on the interface options available to them.
Navigation
Navigation refers to the act of moving between categories and records within a session. The platform provides a structured navigation path as a default, but users may move freely between categories using the category list.
Access and enquiries
Access enquiry
An access enquiry is a submission made through the Contact & Access page by a user who wishes to obtain access to the platform. It is not the same as access itself. An access enquiry initiates a review by the support team, which may result in access being confirmed, deferred pending further information, or declined.
Access confirmation
Access confirmation is the communication from the support team that informs a user that their enquiry has been successful and that they may proceed to use the platform. It is provided via email and includes the information needed to begin using the service.
Support team
The support team refers to the personnel at Gulmaroks Pty Ltd who review access enquiries, respond to general questions, and provide assistance with the platform. The support team can be reached at [email protected] or by telephone on +61 2 8006 3471.
Common misunderstandings
Several aspects of the Gulmaroks service are sometimes misunderstood by users who are familiar with other types of information tools. The following points address common points of confusion.
- The platform is not a search engine. Entering a term does not retrieve all matching records across the full database. Navigation is category-based, not keyword-based.
- Classification is not performed by users. Users interact with existing categories; they do not assign records to categories or create new ones.
- An access enquiry is not the same as receiving access. Enquiries are reviewed individually, and access is not automatic upon submission.
- The platform does not synthesise or summarise information. It presents records as they exist within the classification structure without generating new content in response to user input.
